The Modern Day Shooter

We see a lot of shooting games these days, probably because they're popular, easy to make, and some are just yearly series that just keep going, and going, and going. We've got Battlefield, Call of Duty, Halo, and many more, and in a way, they all feel similar. You shoot stuff, blow stuff up, and try to win. Of course, while they are still quite different in their own ways, it doesn't feel like anything innovative is being created with each new game.

That's not to say shooters haven't been having interesting games being created. Binary Domain had it's voice interaction during battles, multiple endings, and relationships based on how you managed your team. Spec Ops: The Line had it's story that showed war in the most grueling way, the real way, and how it affected a single man. The Darkness had a unique story, and it had unique powers that added to the experience of shooting away as well. These games are all trying something new, and they are highly interesting as a result of those experiments.

Many say the shooter genre is coming to a standstill in evolution because gamers continue to buy and play the generic shooters that keep churning out, and in a way they are right. The innovative games that come out most often don't do as well, and it's truly saddening to think that there is potential for greatness that is not being supported.
