Surgeon Simulator 2013 Review

Ever thought about being a surgeon? Well, here's your chance to give it a shot! Surgeon Simulator 2013, by Bossa Studios, sounds pretty intimidating, but is in fact a humorous game. Clumsily smash your patient's rib cage apart and messily cut out his heart with a pair of scissors wielded in your shaky hands.

You may have already heard about this game, a funny little game, that was available on the net. The quick prototype done for the 2013 Global Game Jam spread across the net, became known for it's funny surgical operations. After it's popularity soared, Bossa Studios completed the game, and what we get is the game this review is all about.

The premise of this game is that you're a surgeon, and you need to perform some life-altering surgeries! The only thing you control in this game is your hand. You can close your fingers up individually and make a fist, rotate your wrist around, and that's it. Simple controls, you'd think this was an easy game to play. You're wrong. You'll fumble around trying to grab objects, struggle to hold on to and use them, it's extremely difficult to control your hand. And that's all a part of the fun! Your inability to control your own hand
results in hilarious situations all around.

The game's rather difficult, and there's no guide to teach you what to do. Well, you're a surgeon, so you should know what to do, right? The first operation you need to do is a heart transplant. They give you that direction, and off you go! Since you don't actually know what to do, you'll probably end up experimenting. Grab a few tools, and see what you can do with it. There are plenty of objects to use, and you can do whatever you like.

In Surgeon Simulator, your only goal is to replace the organ. The interface in this game is simple, it tells you how long you've been working on your patient, how much blood he has left, and the rate he's losing blood at. The game will grade your operation based on how long you took, and how much blood your patient has left. You can strive to achieve a better grade as many times as you like, the hospital won't fire you even if it's your 100th botched operation resulting in somebody's death.

The greatest moments of this game, are how badly you'll find yourself fumbling up and hurting your patient. His blood level will begin to lower, maybe he'll be spewing blood from a hole you accidentally poked in him! All you need to do is replace heart, who cares if the rest of his organs are lying on the floor when it's done right? The controls are difficult to use, your hand is a pain to control, and that gives us plenty of good laughs when something goes wrong. The reception desk that acts as your main menu even has plenty of objects lying around for you to mess around with as well. While fumbling up is a part of the game, and a direct result of the difficult controls, it can get a little frustrating at times.

The somewhat-realistic physics are silly, when the hammer you've got a grip on slowly slips out of your hand, and for whatever reason is spinning round and round in your tight grip. Once in a while your arm might decide to fling itself away, and your tool goes flying as well. The worst offender though, is when you try to grab something, you know your hand could fit in between his stomach and the kidney, just a little tug and you could be victorious. But, you end up spending 5 minutes trying to grab his kidney, because you accidentally nudged it a little further in than necessary.

Surgeon Simulator 2013 is a riot, you'll be having a good laugh, especially if there's a few onlookers. The serious operations will turn into silly fun fests. There are a good 6 levels to do, and each will give you plenty to do, many messes will be made, and a large variety of tools are available for you to do that with.

8/10
